1 the water sprite and the bear. 2 the water spirte and the bear sowed beets. 3 the water sprite said: "the bottom (belongs) (to) me!" and the bear said: "i take the top!" 4 in autumn the beets were ripe to collect, and now the water sprite and the bear apportion their beets among each other. 5 the bear took the top, the water sprite took the underground part (actually the part from the soil). 6 the bear eats the beet stems, but he isn't full up. "it doesn't taste good!" he says. 7 the bear said to the water sprite: "well! let's sow rye! but this time i take the bottom, the underground part, and this time you get the top!" 8 they sowed, cut after that the rye and after the harvest they took the sheaves home. 9 thereon they tresh, and the water sprite took the grain, but the bear the straw. 10 the bear started to eat and already says: "you are cheating me! you gave me the beet stems, but took the beets for yourself. now i took the bottom of the rye, and it doesn't taste good neither: you got the rye, the straw remained for me! i don't want to sow with you anymore!" 11 the bear went back to the forest and from now on he sowed his beets and rye alone.
