1 kemjas, the youngest of three men.
2 Three men live in a hunting lodge, none of them has a wife.
3 The two younger siblings go to hunt, the eldest brother stays at home, patches sock holes and prepares a meal for his younger brothers' return.
4 While he was preparing the food (the claudron), he went out for firewood. 
5 Outside he heard three swans, then he ran into the house.
6 While he sat inside three women entered.
7 The three women dragged him [off from the bench and] spooned hot meat onto his stomach instead of a plate.
8 His siblings returned home, his siblings said to him: "Why didn't you start a fire? We are freezing!"
9 He said: "My claudron overturned, my stomach was burned with hot soup."
10 At night they slept, the next day it was time to go hunting again.
11 This time the middle sibling stayed at home.
12 He prepares food, patches sockes, starts to prepare the cauldron for his younger and elder brother's return.
13 He too goes out for firewood.
14 Outside three swans yelled; he went into the house.
15 While he sat inside, three women entered.
16 The women dragged him [off from the bench and] spooned hot meat onto his stomach.
17 The women ate, finished and started playing cards.
18 They finished playing cards [and] returned home.
19 Then his younger and elder brother returned.
20 Why don't you start a fire? We are freezing!
21 - "The hot cauldron fell on me!"
22 At night they slept, the next day dawned, it was time to go hunting.
23 [On this] other day 'kemjas, the youngest of the three men' stayed at home, his two siblings went hunting.
24 After his brother's left, he makes bowls and a ladle out of wood, patches socks, prepares food for his elder brothers' return.
25 He went out to bring firewood inside.
26 While he stood outside, three swans screeched.
27 'kemjas, the youngest of the three men' ran into the house.
28 While he sat inside three women entered.
29 When the women entered, 'kemjas', the youngest of the three men' climbed onto the fish drying rack.
30 Above he crawled out an opening between the beams.
31 He took the women's swan dress and climbed up to the chimney.
32 He ignited the women's dresses in fire through the chimney; the swan dresses burned.
33 He hurried down [and] went to the women.
34 The women sat there while they ate.
35 When he entered, the women left [and] searched for their swan dresses - they were gone.
36 They went in again.
37 They went in, 'kemjas, the youngest of the three men' said: "Now you won't be going anywhere. It won't take long [before] my brothers return."
38 After sitting there for a little while, the two brothers returned from the forest.
39 'kemjas, the youngest of the three men' said to his brothers: "I brought you two wives. From now on we won't be patching socks and preparing food. We will live for hunting then, but our wives will live only for the food and socks."
40 When these things were over, they lived for a while; it was time for the men to go hunting again.
41 Before they set off to hunt, 'kemjas, the youngest of the three men' said to the women: "After we leave you shouldn't play cards [a lot], in this village of ours there is something terrible."
42 The three men went hunting in the forest, the women stayed at home.
43 After the men left the women started playing cards.
44 While they played, the trees started creaking.
45 The youngest of the women said to her sisters: "They did tell us: we aren't allowed to play! Why are you playing [so] much?"
46 Suddenly the threshold [of the house] fell into the house, a seven headed old meŋk entered.
47 The old meŋk said to the women: "Children, we shall play cards, [let us see,] who is stronger. If I lose, you'll kill me; if you lose, I'll take you with me!"
48 The eldest woman sat down to play cards, lost and the old meŋk put her into his bag.
49 The middle woman sat down, she lost as well.
50 The youngest woman sat down, she lost as well.
51 The old meŋk put all of them into his bad and the old meŋk left.
52 The men returned home from the hunt - the women weren't there.
53 'kemjas, the youngest of the three men' told his brothers: "I'll go look for our women. Whether I'll go for a long or short time - I'll return!"
54 'kemjas, the youngest of the three men' got prepared and left.
55 He started going, he went, went.
56 He reached a small house, he went inside.
57 Inside an old man sits, he is forging iron.
58 The old man asks: "'kemjas, the youngest of the three men', where are you going, what do you need, [what] are you lacking of?"
59 - "My women were kidnapped, I go to search for my women."
60 The old man said: "By whom were your women kidnapped?"
61 - "I don't know."
62 - "Your women were kidnapped by the seven-headed old meŋk. Three days ago they passed by here."
63 'kemjas, the youngest of the three men' slept at this old man's place.
64 He woke up in the morning, ate, drank and set off, onward again.
65 He started going, he went, went.
66 He reached a small house again, he entered; an old man is forging iron.
67 The old man asks: "'kemjas, the youngest of the three men', where are you going?"
68 - "My women were kidnapped, I go to search for my women."
69 The old man said: "By whom were your women kidnapped?"
70 - "I don't know by whom they were kidnapped."
71 - "Your women were kidnapped by the seven-headed old meŋk, five days ago they passed by here."
72 'kemjas, the youngest of the three men' ate, drank, lied down.
73 At night he slept, in the morning he got up, again he went onward.
74 He started going, he went, went.
75 Again he reached a third small house.
76 He reached the small house, he went in; an old man is forging iron.
77 The old man asks: "'kemjas, the youngest of the three men', where are you going?"
78 - "My women were kidnapped, I go to search for my women."
79 - "By whom were your women kidnapped?"
80 - "I don't know."
81 - "Your women were kidnapped by the seven-headed old meŋk. Seven days ago he passed by here, the seven-headed old meŋk. What will you do about him? Many a man went to him and couldn't finish [him] off!"
82 - "I will have to go somehow!"
83 He spent the night at this old man's place, got up, prepared to set off again.
84 The old man started talking to [him]: "[So] you'll go to him [and then] arrive [there]. The seven-headed old meŋk has a servant, the servant's name is 'the tailless squirrel sized man'. You will go to him, he will start fleeing. Start shouting: "I am a lost man, I am a lost man!" He will stop then. He has an iron mace; [if] he throws this iron mace, then it can break down trees. You will start walking, you grab his iron mace. He will be slightly ahead, fling the mace at him; he will be killed by the iron mace. Then you shall be the 'tailless squirrel sized man'. You'll reach the meŋk's house; carry seven sled-full of wood into the house in your arms in seven turns!"
85 'kemjas, the youngest of the three men' set off.
86 He went for long or for a short while, suddenly he noticed 'the tailless squirrel sized man'.
87 'The tailless squirrel sized man' saw him [, and] wanted to start fleeing.
88 'kemjas, the youngest of the three men' started shouting: "Stop, stop, do not flee! I am a lost man, I am a lost man!"
89 'The tailless squirrel sized man' stopped.
90 'kemjas, the youngest of the three men' went up [to him].
91 'The tailless squirrel sized man' said to him: "Where are you going?"
92 - "I wanted to join your lord as a servant, [but] I got lost. This is the fifth year that I had been lost."
93 With this they set off onward.
94 'kemjas, the youngest of the three men' grabbed the iron mace, he carries it.
95 'The tailless squirrel sized man' went ahead slightly; he flung the mace, he killed 'the tailless squirrel sized man'.
96 And so he became 'the tailless squirrel sized man'.
97 'kemjas, the youngest of the three men' reached the meŋk's house.
98 He chopped his [seven] sled-full of wood into small pieces, he threw it into the house.
99 He went in to the old meŋk.
100 The old meŋk requests: "'tailless squirrel sized man', my servant, it is time to prepare food!"
101 The 'tailless squirrel sized man' went out, brought in the food, began to prepare the food.
102 The cauldron boiled.
103 He started feeding the old meŋk.
104 The old meŋk dropped half an iron bread into the cauldron: loud animals swam to the rim of the cauldron.
105 He poured the soup into the old meŋk's gaping mouth.
106 After that he prepared food for the women too.
107 The eldest woman asked for water from the 'tailless squirrel sized man'.
108 The 'tailless squirrel sized man' dropped a ring into the water bowl.
109 The eldest woman understood: 'kemjas, the youngest of the three men' has come!
110 The women told the old meŋk: "Tomorrow we'll go [get] wood chips."
111. The old meŋk sent (ordered) them away [to get] wood chips.
112 Meanwhile they escaped.
113 After the women left the 'tailless squirrel sized man' started preparing the old meŋk food again.
114 He brought the food in to cook, he put it into the cauldron; the cauldron started boiling.
115 When the cauldron boiled, he threw a whole iron bread into the cauldron: loud animals swam to the rim of the cauldron.
116 He started pouring the soup into the old meŋk's gaping mouth.
117 After he fed the old meŋk, he was driven mad by the animals.
118 The old meŋk went mad.
119 After that seven knives hang from above [from the sky] on a wire.
120 'kemjas, the youngest of the three men' took his own thin knife, he cut down these knives.
121 The seven-headed old meŋk's heads were cut down one-by-one, 'kemjas the youngest of the three men' said: "I have come a long time ago, I have killed your 'tailless squirrel sized man' a long time ago and now I have killed you as well."
122 'kemjas, the youngest of the three men' ran out of the house [and] started fleeing.
123 The seven-headed old meŋk's body continued chasing him on the same way.
124 'kemjas, the youngest of the three men' ran, ran till he reached the house from before.
125 The body chased him on the same way.
126 He ran into the house, the old man from before was preparing iron ice picks.
127 He plunged (set) an iron icepick into the old meŋk's body.
128 'kemjas, the youngest of the three men' fled again.
129 The body goes after him again.
130 He reached the second house.
131 Iron icepicks were being prepared there as well.
132 He plunged an iron icepick into the old meŋk's body again.
133 It became weaker yet.
134 'kemjas, the youngest of the three men' fled again.
135 He reached the third house; the old meŋk continued to go after [him].
136 'kemjas, the youngest of the three men''s women have all reached this house.
137 In that house an iron drum fish trap was being prepared.
138 The meŋk's body got there.
139 The meŋk's body was laid into the iron drum fish trap, they carried it up to the Ob as high as a lot of people's height, they threw it into the water.
140 'kemjas, the youngest of the three men' took his women and started preparing to return home.
141 The old men who forged iron, told [him]: "If you had parents (mother and father) before, [so] are we your parents' lunx spirits. [Now] go home; as you saw us [before] make a sacrificial bowl, a sacrifial cauldron for us (in the same fashion), don't forget us!"
142 The speech reached [it's] end, 'kemjas, the youngest of the three men' took his women and started off home with the women.
143 So they went, went; they went for a long time, for a short time, they returned home.
144 After they returned home, 'kemjas, the youngest of the three men' handed the two women to his brothers, he took his own woman and continued living on, 'kemjas, the youngest of the three men' said: "You [all] shall be judged!"
145 They raised the eldest woman up as high as a lot of people's height, they beat her, beat her - a small colourful stone fell out [of her mouth].
146 They started beating the middle woman as well - from the middle woman's mouth a small white stone fell out.
147 They beat, beat the youngest woman - she was completely innocent.
148. 22 'kemjas, the youngest of the three men' took is wife and went to the Ob's lower part.
149 The middle man took his wife, he went to the Ob's upper part.
150 The eldest man took his wife, he went to the Urals.
